Though stateside audiences will finally get a glimpse of Peter Parker’s latest adventures this weekend, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” has already landed overseas and we can confirm the result is less than stellar. “[A] film that kicks off the summer blockbuster season with a resounding thud” is how we phrased it, but it wasn’t long ago that we caught the take from Sam Raimi that prompted a franchise reboot in the first place, and now the folks at Honest Trailers have launched a tribute of sorts to the “Evil Dead” director’s initial trilogy.
The fake trailer cuts a wide path across the whole of Raimi’s three installments, calling them the “Godfather Trilogy” of superhero films in terms of terrific first and second films and then an abominable third. Naturally then, “Spider-Man 3” receives the largest dose of sardonic commentary as facets both annoyingly nitpicky and justly cited are featured—whether it be the narrative convenience of The Sandman (Thomas Haden Church) to the motivation of Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker, or simply the limits of nighttime visibility from Eddie Brock/Venom (Topher Grace).
So perhaps before you head out to Marc Webb’s latest installment with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, featuring far too many villains in an already-crowded tale, check out a quick reminder of how history tends to repeat itself. Watch below.
