So, is "End Of Watch" yet another familiar cop drama from David Ayer just dressed up in POV/found footage aesthetics or does it truly have something new to say about being a cop in Los Angeles? We'll find out soon enough, but as this new trailer bears out, it certainly won't be lacking energy.
Starring Jake Gyllenhall and Michael Pena, the pair star as partners patrolling one of the roughest hoods around who run up against a Mexican drug cartel who have no qualms about wasting anyone who gets in their way. We will say the first half of this trailer is promising and compelling, seeming to give an insider's perspective on the day-to-day grunt work of being a cop on the streets. But the shoot-em-up, video game style second half feels ripped from any number of genre flicks in the past decade, and the shaky-cam approach makes it feel even more superficial. So in short, we've got mixed feelings on this one.
Co-starring Anna Kendrick, Frank Grillo, America Ferrara and more, "End Of Watch" premieres at TIFF and opens on September 21st.
