If you paid any attention to the music world last year, there is no doubt that Odd Future crossed your radar. The brash, crass, eclectic and excellent hip hop collective earned equal amounts praise and criticism from critics for their dark and violent songs, yet at the same time, they were one of the most creative and interesting things happening in all of hip hop. 2012 will see them to continue to grow, quickly moving into TV with their Adult Swim show “Loiter Squad” (bonkers trailer here) premiering this Friday. But the music isn’t far behind, and today the group dropped The Odd Future Tape Vol. 2. And lo and behold, an impromptu video has arrived.
Lance Bangs — famed music video helmer, documentarian and frequent collaborator with Spike Jonze — has been hanging with OFWGKTA lately, and a recent photoshoot with Terry Richardson turned into an on-the-fly video for “Oldie,” the 10 minute epic closing track on the mixtape. The video is not much more than the members of the group doing their verses in a photostudio, but not only is the song pretty great, but it’s kind of awesome to see everyone getting hyped up for each other’s verses. But that’s not all the Odd Future you’re getting. Bangs also shot a mini-documentary on the group’s lone female member Syd Tha Kid for VBS.tv and it’s a peek behind the curtain a bit on the artist and the band itself. And it’s actually kind of fascinating to see someone in the group, grounded in something resembling reality.
Anyway, both are worth a watch so check ’em out below. [Stereogum/Highsnobiety]
