Remember Lee Daniels juxataposing a rape scene with the carving of a turkey in "Precious"? Yeah, subtlety isn't exactly the director's strong point, showy, sub-film-student directorial flourishes having tarnished his previous film, and the helmer is at it again with the uneccessary iMovie transitions in this latest clip from "The Paperboy," which showcases the stellar cast of Matthew McConaughey, Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron and David Oyelowo.
Based on a Pete Dexter novel, story follows respected journalist Ward James (McConaughey) and his brother Jack (Efron), a college dropout, as they investigate the possible wrongful conviction of a death row inmate who was found guilty of killing a sheriff. John Cusack takes on the death row inmate while Oyelowo plays a compatriot of the James brothers with Scott Glenn as their father and the EIC at their newspaper.
Directorial choices aside, the cast and story here is one definitely worth getting excited about especially with McConaughey whose set for a massive breakout at Cannes with this and Jeff Nichols' "Mud." All the clips and photos so far have been promising so here's hoping Daniels is able to get out of the way of the script this time around. 'Paperboy' premieres this coming Wednesday.
