"Prometheus" is offering up one of the most exciting movies of the year, "The Dark Knight Rises" promises the epic conclusion to Christopher Nolan's game-changing franchise, "The Avengers" assembles every Marvel superhero under one roof… what does "The Amazing Spider-Man" have to offer? A reboot of the comic story Sam Raimi turned into a trilogy that only ended five years ago, Sony and Marc Webb will need to do some convincing, but it seems they are offering a grittier take than the previous, more light-hearted (and emo) effort.
An international trailer has dropped for the movie and while it's very similar to the spot that arrived back in February, it offers up enough new footage to make it worth the watch. The tone for this spot is a bit darker than its American counterpart, dropping most of the humor beats and sticking with the dramatic, action-oriented tone. And it works. Despite the nagging familiarity of the story, Rhys Ifans' villain is certainly compelling and the supporting cast (Sally Field has one of the best lines of the trailer) looks very solid as well. And as for the action, Sony has rightfully moved away from the goofy POV-you-are-there-this-is-in-3D approach of early teasers, focusing on the hand-to-hand stuff and big setpieces.
"The Amazing Spider-Man" opens on July 3rd.
