While you never know which way a jury will swing, it’d be safe to say that Paolo Sorrentino is a strong contender for the Palme d’Or with his upcoming "Youth." While the film does see him work with Hollywood stars, the authorial stamp seems to be intact, and after a great first trailer captured attention, a new one has arrived and it certainly bears out a promising picture.
Starring Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel, Rachel Weisz, and Paul Dano, the story follows a retired conductor holidaying in the Alps who reflects on a life-long friendship after receiving an invitation to perform for the Queen of England. And this latest look is suffused with great imagery and a lovely, palpable sense of mood. It’s those qualities that made "The Great Beauty" such an arthouse hit, and it looks like Sorrentino has once again put together something special.
Check out the new trailer below. "Youth" opens in Italy on May 21st, and while no U.S. date has been set, it looks like Fox Searchlight will be picking up the film. And if you’re wondering, the song in the trailer is "Ceiling Gazing" by Mark Kozelek and Jimmy LaValle.
