So far, the superheroes of 2014 have presented a mixed bag. We’ve had one pretty good movie (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier“), a pretty terrible one (“The Amazing Spider-Man 2“) and one yet to be determined (this weekend’s “X-Men: Days Of Future Past“). And there’s still more to come. At the end of the summer, Marvel will unleash “Guardians Of The Galaxy,” and a brand new trailer has arrived hoping to convince you to go into orbit … or at least to your closest multiplex.
There’s a lot riding on this movie: the future success of lead Chris Pratt (who is also tasked with bringing next summer’s “Jurassic World” to life), the life of a potential new franchise (Marvel is already talking spinoffs), and whether or not audiences have room in their hearts for yet another team of superheroes. But the secret weapon to making it work might be co-writer and director James Gunn, who is bringing his arch, winking sensibility to the source material and delivering a distinct tone that could make it stand out from the Marvel crowd, and the rest of the big screen superhero competition.
Whether or not it works, you’ll just have to judge for yourself in the new trailer below. Or just watch the whole movie when it drops on August 1st.
