Paul Thomas Anderson is no stranger to directing music videos. Hell, he’s basically the personal videographer for Haim. And while his videos for that band typically are fun, vibrant, and a little silly sometimes, he’s bringing a whole new vibe for his most recent music video, The Smile’s “Wall of Eyes.”
In “Wall of Eyes,” the video is focused primarily on lead singer Thom Yorke. Yes, that’s THE Thom Yorke, of Radiohead fame. In fact, The Smile also includes Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood (an accomplished film composer, as well). The video is black and white and is very somber, which is fitting for a song written by this band.
While we are still awaiting final word on what film Anderson has next on his schedule, we’ll have to make due with whatever music videos he wants to direct in the meantime. The most recent scuttlebutt says Anderson is prepping his next feature, which could be based on another of Thomas Pynchon’s novels. (He previously directed “Inherent Vice,” which is based on a Pynchon novel.) But even with the rumors, we still don’t know what’s going to happen. Since the SAG and WGA strikes only recently ended, we haven’t heard much concrete news regarding what PTA has up his sleeve.
All that to say, it’s always a good day when we see something new from Paul Thomas Anderson. And considering we don’t know when that next feature film is coming, we’ll gladly accept a music video.
