Fans of Park Chan-wook probably remember that the master Korean filmmaker shot a short film entirely on an iPhone 4 a few years back (that is, two iPhones ago). The short, “Night Fishing” aka “Paramanjang,” was made with some help from his brother, Park Chan-kyong and was released theatrically in South Korea back in January of 2011, hitting the festival circuit shortly after. For those who haven’t had a chance to catch the film can rejoice as the short is available on YouTube in its entirety.
The short is a whimsical tale of life and death, about a man who goes fishing into the night and winds up catching the body of a woman with his hook, entangling himself with her in the process and she comes alive. The film then abruptly changes to a funeral ritual where the woman is a shaman priestess, and the fisherman speaks through her to his relatives, asking for forgiveness. It’s all delightfully weird stuff and, all things considered, the iPhone experiment worked out fairly well, adding a demented look to an already strange and moving tale. What do you think?
