Here’s a bit of a warning before you watch this latest trailer for the Coen Brothers‘ marvelous “Inside Llewyn Davis“—it’s not exactly spoiler heavy, but there are some revelations that are best experienced completely cold. That being said, if you just can’t resist, the movie certainly won’t be ruined for you, and this latest spot does a solid job at capturing the irresistible blend of drama and morose humour the sibling directors have perfected over their career.
But just as they did with “O Brother, Where Are Thou?,” their latest is fueled by an undercurrent of music, this time set against the backdrop of the ’60s folk scene, following the travails of one Llewyn Davis (a excellent exasperated Oscar Isaac) across roughly one week of his life. Dealing with a music career in stasis, a contentious relationship with his ex-girlfriend (a hilariously bitter Carey Mulligan) and a yearning to make something of himself, the film moves like a folk song, telling a bunch of different stories, but not necessarily anchored on a specific plot.
Everything in this movie clicks effortlessly, including a running gag with a cat that turns into something even more. Beautifully shot and acted, this is simply a gem, and if you need more convincing, just read our A-grade review. Co-starring Justin Timberlake, John Goodman, Adam Driver, and Garrett Hedlund, “Inside Llewyn Davis” opens on December 6th.
