We are currently in the midst of Hollywood’s reboot and retcon culture, and as we’ve learned from "Terminator Genisys," sometimes all that retooling can barely make any sense. And yet another franchise is in the process of being reinvented: X-Men. Last year’s "X-Men: Days Of Future Past" did a large narrative reset, and admittedly, it mostly worked. But according to director Bryan Singer, that film, and the ones that came before, were just scratching the surface and the real X-Men are yet to come.
So, what was I watching before? The problem with reboots, or pretending the timelines in previous films don’t matter, is leaving the audience perpetually suspended and unable to truly invest in a movie because there’s something around the corner to undo what they’ve just seen.
