So, remember when the Internet was convinced that KHAAAAAAAAAN would be the villain in "Star Trek 2" because Benicio Del Toro was intially tapped to play the role, and then Edgar Ramirez and Jordi Molla were being tossed around to replace him after he bounced? Well, guess again.
Rising British actor Benedict Cumberbatch has snagged a role in J.J. Abrams' highly anticipated sequel, and while Deadline says it's unknown whether or not he'll be a hero or villain, Variety says he got the part Ramirez and Molla were gunning for. Confused yet!? Either way, we're more inclined to believe the latter, and mostly we hope that's the case because a reboot of KHAAAAAAAN would be quite lame (as would making Cumberbatch look like Ricardo Montalban). Either way, it's another big notch in Cumberbatch's belt who is currently coming off a fantastic turn in "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy," he also pops up in "War Horse" and oh yeah, he's got a tiny indie project called "The Hobbit" on the horizon too.
Cumberbatch joins an intriguing array of talent on the Enterprise that will find Alice Eve, Peter Weller and fellow Brit Noel Clarke (announced earlier today) also along for the ride. Abrams will gear up to shoot the movie soon and when he's done, he's gonna toss it through ye olde 3D Conversion Machine and release it in theaters on May 17, 2013.
