You know what could have been really lame? “What We Do In The Shadows,” the TV series spin-off of Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s excellent Sundance vampire mockumentary from 2014 (the film that got the latter filmmaker on the radar of people like Marvel‘s Kevin Feige). In case you’re unaware, ‘Shadows’ on FX was created by Clement, but Waitti has been around occasionally to direct and co-star, and the series follows four vampire roommates in Staten Island and stars Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou, Harvey Guillén, and Mark Proksch. ‘Shadows even pushed forward the ‘Vampires’ mythology, creating the idea of the human-vampire familiar (a human slave/assistant who doesn’t get eaten, played by Guillén) and the energy vampire who loves to work in offices and drain cubicle co-workers of their spirit and will to live (Proksch).

‘Shadows’ has become so popular that many actors have stopped by for cameos. The show’s guests have included Nick Kroll, Dave Bautista, Vanessa Bayer, Kristen Schaal, Mark Hammil, Benedict Wong, Lucy Punch, and more. In fact, the end of season two ended with a huge vampire tribunal which saw Taika Waititi, Jonathan Brugh, and Jemaine Clement reprise their vampire roles from the original film and actors like Tilda Swinton, Evan Rachel Wood, Paul Reubens, Wesley Snipes, Danny Trejo and more to reprise their famous and iconic vampire roles from previous movie and films, as part of the vampire council that rules on whether the Staten Island vampires should live or die. It all ended in a big cliffhanger, but boy was that finale a laugh riot.
