Got a Tip?

‘Winter’s Bone’ & ‘The Kids Are All Right’ Lead The Nominees For The Spirit Awards

With seven and five nominations respectively for “Winter’s Bone” and “The Kids Are All Right,” female directors and their films are leading the pack this year at the Independent Spirit Awards.

The nominations, announced this morning by the giggly Eva Mendes (the word “monogamy” sent her into small fit of laughter) and Jeremy Renner, boasted some intriguing surprises. While the the two critically acclaimed films leading the pack were pretty much expected to feature heavily, who would’ve thought “Greenberg” would’ve earned four nominations including Best Feature or that “Mother & Child” would come out of nowhere to land nods for Naomi Watts and Samuel L. Jackson? In another surprising turn, Best Female Lead for the first time has six nominees this year and is a strong indication of how heavily contested that slot will be over the upcoming months. Also of note, Ronald Bronstein who took home the Gotham Award last night for Breakthrough Actor for his performance in “Daddy Longlegs” continues to have a helluva fall, landing a Best Male Lead nod here alongside the likes of James Franco (“127 Hours“), Ben Stiller (“Greenberg“) and Aaron Eckhart (“Rabbit Hole“).

The Spirit Awards will take place Saturday, February 26th and will be hosted by Joel McHale. Full list of nominees after the jump.
