Got a Tip?

‘X-Force’ Director Talks About Team’s Introduction In ‘Deadpool 2’ And Where To Go Next

**Spoilers for “Deadpool 2”**

One of the best gags in “Deadpool 2” is how the film handles the introduction of X-Force. If you’re a fan of the comics and are eagerly awaiting the upcoming “X-Force” spin-off film, it was apparent that “Deadpool 2” was going to act as a “backdoor pilot” for the team-up film and introduce audiences to Shatterstar, Zeitgeist, Domino, and the rest of the crew. However, then you witness the death of every character and you realize that the film has been trolling you.

It’s a great joke, and it kills (no pun intended) at every screening. However, the joke comes at the expense of what is supposed to be Fox’s latest, greatest attempt at building a good X-Universe franchise. Well, the filmmaker in charge of the “X-Force” production isn’t concerned about Ryan Reynolds and company killing most of the team. In fact, he was laughing along with the rest of the audience.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Drew Goddard, who is writing and directing “X-Force,” spoke about the joke and what it means for his film.

“To be honest, I think that’s why it excited me so much,” Goddard explained. “I remember reading that scene and just cackling with delight, specifically because it was the very last thing you’d expect to happen in one of these movies. These movies are so careful to set up the next thing and the next thing, and it made me so happy.”

Of course, Ryan Reynolds was worried about the joke making Goddard upset, but when the actor went to the “X-Force” helmer, Reynolds was given the blessing to go ahead. “One thing I said to Ryan was, ‘Don’t worry about it, we’ll come up with new ideas; you guys go make your movie, and do your thing. We’ll figure it out,’” he says.

And figure it out, he will. But what most fans considered the line-up for the upcoming film is completely throw into the wood chipper (sorry, Zeitgeist). On the one hand, that gives Goddard a blank slate to work with in his film, however, it also creates a bit of a joke around the name “X-Force.”

Either way, Goddard is excited about the future because the three remaining members of the team are a great starting point. “It really all stems from a place of love; I love those comics, I love Ryan, I love Josh, and I love Zazie Beetz,” Goddard revealed. “When I think of the comics, I think of Cable and Domino and Deadpool, and it’s really just knowing, ‘Oh, right, there’s a world in the X-Universe for the blunt instruments of mutantdom.’ It’s much more about the characters and my love for them than it is about any plot or storyline. It’s more about loving them and wanting to see them bounce off each other.”

“X-Force” doesn’t have a release date, but with “Deadpool 2” continuing to have success at the box office, you can bet that Fox (or whoever owns them next year) wants to get the ball rolling on this film sooner than later.
