French director Quentin Dupieux may be in the busiest period of his career. After two films in 2022 (“Smoking Causes Coughing” and “Incredible But True“), he released two more last year. First up, the faux-biopic “Daaaaaalí!,” which bowed at the Venice Film Festival and still awaits a stateside theatrical release. And then there’s “Yannick,” another film Dupieux quickly released in French theaters last August before screening at the Locarno Film Festival the next day.
Now MUBI has “Yannick” ready for its US release, exclusive to the streamer. The absurdist comedy stars Raphaël Quenard as a heckler who takes a Paris theatre hostage to rewrite the play being performed up to his expectations. Read on for an official synopsis, courtesy of MUBI:
On a rare night off, car park guard Yannick attends a production of the play “Le Cocu.” Dissatisfied by the performance, he hijacks the show and demands to be made the playwright to prove even he can create good entertainment.
Along with Quenard, “Yannick” also stars Pio Marmaï, Blanche Gardin, Sébastian Chessange, Agnés Hurstel, and Jean-Paul Solal. Dupieux writes “Yannick” along with directing (and editing, and being his own cinematogrpaher), as he typically does for his films. He also co-produces the film with Thomas Verhaeghe, Mathieu Verhaeghe, and Hugo Selignac.
Dupieux got nominated for Best Screenplay at the Lumiéres for “Yannick,” so French critics were high on this film. But how will American critics and audiences take to the film? Find out when “Yannick” hits MUBI on April 5. As for a US theatrical release for “Daaaaaalí,” stay tuned for new on that.
