‘Yardie’ Trailer: Idris Elba Makes His Directorial Debut With This Intense Crime Thriller

One of the most talked-about films that premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival is the directorial debut from Idris Elba, titled “Yardie.” The film follows the life of a young Jamaican man who finds himself deep in a life of crime after witnessing a brutal act of violence as a kid. Since the film’s premiere, we haven’t heard much about the film, until now.

The first full trailer for the film was recently released, and in it, you see the intensity that Ebla has brought to his film. “Yardie” doesn’t seem to pull any punches as you see the violence and drama that surrounds the young character D, at the center of the story.

“Yardie” stars Aml Ameen, Stephen Graham, Akin Gazi, and Naomi Ackie. As mentioned above, the film is directed by actor Idris Elba. The film is based on the novel of the same name by author Victor Headley, who also co-wrote the script.

There’s no word yet on a US release, but “Yardie” should be hitting UK theaters soon.

Here’s the synopsis for the film:

Set in ’70s Kingston and ’80s Hackney, Yardie centres on the life of a young Jamaican man named D (Aml Ameen), who has never fully recovered from the murder, committed during his childhood, of his older brother Jerry Dread (Everaldo Creary). D grows up under the wing of a Kingston Don and music producer named King Fox (Sheldon Shepherd). Fox dispatches him to London, where he reconnects with his childhood sweetheart, Yvonne (Shantol Jackson), and his daughter who he’s not seen since she was a baby. He also hooks up with a soundclash crew, called High Noon. But before he can be convinced to abandon his life of crime and follow “the righteous path”, he encounters the man who shot his brother 10 years earlier, and embarks on a bloody, explosive quest for retribution – a quest which brings him into conflict with vicious London gangster Rico (Stephen Graham).
