The modern war movie doesn’t just showcase the epic and incredibly tense battle scenes that are a trademark of the genre. No, they also include the effect of the civilian war on these soldiers, long after they come back from war. That’s what “The Hurt Locker” did so well in 2009, and that’s what the new film “The Yellow Birds” is attempting to do now.
In the first trailer for the Sundance hit, we meet a couple of soldiers who formed a tight bond while fighting together in Iraq. After an unknown incident happens, the surviving friend is left to explain the truth to the military, his own family, and Jennifer Aniston, who plays the mother of the deceased. The film looks to capture the intensity of war, while also giving a glimpse at what happens to these soldiers when they come home and have to answer for what happened during the heat of battle.
“The Yellow Birds” stars Alden Ehrenreich (of the upcoming massive film “Solo: A Star Wars Story”), Tye Sheridan (“Ready Player One”), as well as Toni Collette, Jennifer Aniston, Jason Patric, and Jack Huston. The film is directed by French filmmaker Alexandre Moors, who comes from the music video world and helmed a previous film titled “Blue Caprice.”
“The Yellow Birds” will be released exclusively on DirecTV May 17, and in theaters and VOD on June 15.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Against the explosive backdrop of the Iraq War, young soldiers Brandon Bartle (Alden Ehrenreich) and Daniel Murphy (Tye Sheridan) forge a deep bond of friendship. When tragedy strikes the platoon, one soldier must return home to face the hard truth behind the incident, and help a grieving mother (Jennifer Aniston) find peace. With a compelling mix of battle action and poignant drama, The Yellow Birds is an unforgettable movie whose power resonates long after the final frame.
