Got a Tip?

Yes, The ‘Point Break’ Remake Is Happening & It Now Has A Director

nullRemember a couple of years back when it was announced that Alcon Entertainment was going to remake “Point Break” and we all rolled our eyes and groaned and pretended it would go away? Well, it’s back, it’s happening and it now has a director.

The production company has announced that Ericson Core (who is a person, and a not a cellphone) will be helming the reboot, and now we bet you’re asking, “Who?” Well, he directed the Marky Mark football movie “Invincible” and hasn’t done much since, though he does have a number of commercials to his name. Last fall he was linked to “Fair Trade,” remake of the Serbian movie “The Trap” that was mooted to star Liam Neeson, but it was one of those TIFF project announcements that make the trades and never get heard from again.

Anyway, when we spoke to producer Andrew Kosove back in 2011, he was already revealing that the do-over would be stepping back from one of the major elements of Kathryn Bigelow‘s original film. “It’s not a literal remake of the original the way ‘Footloose‘ was — it was identical to the original film. [Our ‘Point Break’] has got elements of the original and it’s not just surfing, it’s other kinds of extreme sports, but surfing is very, very prominent in the story.” And indeed, that’s holding true.

Alcon is keeping plot specifics close to the chest, but they do confirm the new version of the film is set in the world of international extreme sports and will involve an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a criminal ring. Kurt Wimmer (“Salt,” “Law Abiding Citizen,” “Total Recall”) wrote the script, so adjust expectations accordingly….

Production is aiming to get underway by the end of the year with Warner Bros. signed up to distribute. And now the only question remains: Who will be our new Johnny Utah and Bodhi?
