Got a Tip?

Yorgos Lanthimos To Direct Remake Of Korean Sci-Fi-ish Black Comedy ‘Save The Green Planet’

Greek weird wave director Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest film, “Poor Things,” has been nominated for a whopping 11 Oscars, including Best Picture. And while the comedic Frankenstein-esque drama isn’t expected to win a lot of major awards other than Emma Stone for Best Actress (she won the BAFTA yesterday, so she is in good shape), Lanthimos is in a great position to pick whatever he wants to do next. And while Lanthimos has attached himself to many projects over the last few years, we now know what’s next. Revealed today, Lanthimos’ next movie will be a remake of the South Korean fantasy black comedy “Save The Green Planet,” which will be shot this summer in the U.K. and New York. (via Variety).

Originally written and directed by Jang Joon-hwan in 2003, “Save the Green Planet!” is a sci-fi-ish comedy centering on an eccentric and childish man who believes that the world is on the verge of an alien invasion and sets out to save the world. The man tortures a businessman whom he considers to be part of the invasion, and a battle of wits ensues between the captor, his devoted girlfriend, the businessman, and a private detective.

Joon-hwan is known for directing films like “1987: When the Day Comes “(2017) and “Hwayi: A Monster Boy” (2013). “Save The Green Planet!” was his feature-length directorial debut.

Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe at Element Pictures, who produced “Poor Things,” will produce the movie alongside Ari Aster’s Square Peg and CJ ENM (previously named CJ Entertainment)

Lanthimos already has a movie in the can and is expected to arrive later this year for Searchlight Pictures, and knowing his track record; he will probably debut it at the Venice Film Festival. Titled “Kind of Kindness,” the anthology film will reteam him with “Poor Things” cast members Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, plus Jesse Plemons, Hong Chau, and Hunter Schafer. Stone and Lanthimos revealed earlier this year they are already discussing collaborations beyond “Poor Things” and “Kind of Kindness.” Maybe there would be a role for her in “Save The Green Planet”?
