Got a Tip?

Your Return To Pandora Has Been Delayed: ‘Avatar 2’ Pushed To 2017

Avatar, James CameronIt looks like you’re going to have to wait a little while longer to "shit yourself with your mouth wide open." James Cameron is hard at work on the follow-up trilogy to his technology pace-setting, box office breaking hit "Avatar." But making three films at once, overseeing the screenwriting team, designing the creatures and worlds takes time, and the filmmaker is going to need another year before he brings us back to Pandora.

The director has announced that "Avatar 2" won’t be ready until late 2017, a full year after the initially planned 2016 bow. And we presume this means "Avatar 3" and "Avatar 4" are also pushed back accordingly. Cameron cites the involved working process as the main culprit.

"There’s a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don’t get when you’re making a stand-alone film," he said (via Yahoo). "We’re writing three simultaneously. And we’ve done that so that everything tracks throughout the three films. We’re not just going to do one and then make up another one and another one after that. And parallel with that, we’re doing all the design. So we’ve designed all the creatures and the environments."

But in light of a delay, compounded with Cameron continually talking up his own ambition, are expectations reaching unattainable heights? Will what was fresh in 2009 feel stale eight years later? Either way, Fox certainly believes in Cameron, allowing him to take all the time (and money) he needs to get this right. But let us know what you think below.
