Got a Tip?

Zachary Levi Feels Sorry For People Who Trash His ‘Shazam!’ Costume

You may have noticed that we don’t cover set photos on The Playlist. The reason for this is two-fold. First, and definitely foremost, is that set photos normally get taken down almost immediately for legal reasons. However, the second reason is almost as important, and that is because set photos normally are shitty. Of course, there are some photographers that really get some quality pictures, but they’re just that – pictures. Pictures of an out-of-context scene with improper lighting and no digital effects or touch-ups. It’s like watching a high school play instead of a Spielberg film.

So, when images first started popping up of actor Zachary Levi wearing his costume from the upcoming DC film “Shazam!” people started to get scared. His costume is bright red, with a white cape, big muscles, and a huge lightning bolt on the front. Basically, it’s Shazam’s costume, but in real life. But even though the costume looks pretty much exactly as you might expect, there are people dooming the film based solely on shady set photos of a costume.

This brings us to a recent live chat that Levi held with fans, where he was asked a simple question from a “fan,” “WHY THE CRAP SUIT?”

Levi, who has clearly heard this on his social media a lot in recent weeks, went on a rant about these “fans” and why they talk shit about movies that haven’t been released. The whole rant is worth a watch below, but here’s the brief version.

“And I think any of you people out there who are still hung up on what the suit looks like are just wanting to be angry for angry’s sake. I think you’re very insecure, you probably are dealing with some stuff in your own life, and you feel a little powerless, and I’m sorry that you do. Wherever you’re at and whatever you’re going through, I’m sorry that you’re going through that,” said the actor.

“But, I do think you should probably take a second and reflect on why you’re as negative as you are about maybe anything in life, and then re-look at the suit and go, ‘Actually hey, you know what? They’re trying really hard to make something that’s awesome and that pleases a lot of different people,’” he continues.

Look, the truth is the suit does look a little silly. But “Shazam!” is about a little kid who has the power to turn into his version of Superman, so obviously it’s going to be a bit silly. Frankly, if you’re hoping for “Zack Snyder presents Shazam!” then you’re out of luck.

That being said, you can’t help but wonder why Warner Bros. didn’t just release an official picture yet with the costume, just to show fans what they can truly expect. Because no matter how many times Levi defends the suit online, the narrative around the film is about a bright red costume.
