It feels a bit crass to talk about the future of the “Star Wars” franchise just hours after learning of the death of Carrie Fisher, but it’s undeniably a question that many will be wondering about as the new year approaches and “Star Wars: Episode VIII” draws closer on the horizon. And it sounds like Fisher had finished her work on Rian Johnson‘s forthcoming film.
Well, so says TMZ, who are reporting that a Lucasfilm official has shared that Fisher had “absolutely wrapped” her part in ‘Episode VIII.’ There’s no word if that means she did any necessary ADR or pickups that might be required, but it’s safe to assume that all her scenes are at least in the can. Deadline adds that she has a “larger role” in the follow-up to “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” But if you’re wondering about ‘Episode IX’ and beyond, it’s “too early” to determine what kind of impact Fisher’s absence will have, and given we don’t even know the story of ‘Episode VIII’ at this point, that sounds about right.
For now, all good thoughts and love to Fisher and family. “Star Wars: Episode VIII” opens on December 15, 2017.
