This summer, news emerged that a TV adaptation of the iconic comic “Watchmen” was in the works at HBO, with none other than Damon Lindelof (“Lost,” “The Leftovers”) putting his talents to the project. However, it now seems like that has been premature.
“As of right now, I haven’t had any meetings with HBO about ‘Watchmen,’ ” he stated plainly to TV Line.
Indeed, Lindelof is perhaps rightfully uncertain about taking on Alan Moore’s beloved and near canonical effort, likely more than aware how high the expectations will be on the series. Even Zack Snyder, who shot the comic frame for frame in his film adaptation, couldn’t quite translate its magic into cinema.
“I’ve been very vocal about my love for those twelve issues…that they were completely and totally inspiring for all the storytelling that I did subsequently, and that I owe a debt to it,” Lindelof explained. “I do feel like I have to weigh the balance of ‘should it exist’ before I decide to take it on, and I’m sort of in that process now. I hold the source material in such high regard, it would literally be the worst feeling in the world to screw it up…all I can say is I’m thinking about ‘Watchmen’ a lot right now.”
This is actually good news, because no one wants to see “Watchmen” rushed into existence in any format. Thoughts? Let us know in the comments section. [via Heroic Hollywood]
