Jonny Greenwood Scoring Lynne Ramsay’s ‘You Were Never Really Here’ With Joaquin Phoenix

With the festival featuring new movies from Fatih Akin, Bong Joon-Ho, Sofia Coppola, Michael Haneke, Todd Haynes, Yorgos Lanthimos, Ruben Ostlund, Andrey Zvyagintsev and Claire Denis, plus the return of “Twin Peaks” and “Top Of The Lake,” to name one project at Cannes that we’re most looking forward to is a difficult task. But if we were pushed, we might have to go with Lynne Ramsay’s “You Were Never Really Here.

The British director of “Ratcatcher” and “Morvern Callar” hasn’t made a film since 2011’s “We Need To Talk About Kevin,” but she’s back with an adaptation of “Bored To Death” author Jonathan Ames’ novella “You Were Never Really Here,” which teams her up for the first time with Joaquin Phoenix, who stars as a war veteran who becomes embroiled in a sex trafficking case. And excitingly, Ramsay is bringing on a prior collaborator in the shape of Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood.

A spokesperson for IMR International has confirmed to us that Greenwood, who previously worked with the director on “We Need To Talk About Kevin,” is scoring the picture. She’s the only filmmaker that the guitarist/composer has worked with beyond Paul Thomas Anderson (who Greenwood’s scored four films for now, including his upcoming fashion-world movie), and we’re more psyched than ever to learn that he’ll be involved. We’re just a couple of weeks away from the start of Cannes now, so we’ll report back on the film, and Greenwood’s score, when we see it there.
