“The Lego Movie” delivered many surprises, chief among them a great film, but the filmmakers also showed a firm grasp on using music for comedy with the insanely addictive earworm “Everything Is Awesome.” That sensibility was also seen in “The Lego Batman Movie,” albeit to a lesser degree, with “Who’s The (Bat)Man.” But Warner Bros. and the creatives are putting all their songwriting chips on the table when it comes to “The Lego Movie 2.”
According to ‘Lego Batman’ director Chris McKay (who also co-edited “The Lego Movie”), the sequel is going full-on song-and-dance, and even more, it will do it all in outer space. No, really.
” ‘Lego 2’ is going to be this big musical and space action movie. They need a lot of the writing, a lot of development, not only with script development, but development with songwriters. So it was very ambitious to get that movie out,” he told Shanlian On Batman podcast.
With the follow-up still a couple years off, there’s all kinds of time, but it looks like Warner Bros. isn’t afraid of being adventurous with their ‘Lego’ brand. Kind of makes you wish they had the same kind of courage with DC Films…
At any rate, “The Lego Movie 2,” directed by Mike Mitchell (“Trolls,” “Shrek Forever After“), arrives on February 8, 2019. [via SlashFilm]
