J.J. Abrams Is Already Making Major Oscar Predictions For 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi'

Every year, there is the same moaning that “certain films” (i.e. comedies and blockbusters) are ignored by the snooty Academy, who favor arthouse fare. And while there’s some truth to that, let’s be real: popcorn entertainment like “John Wick: Chapter 2” can be great fun, but it’s not necessarily great cinema. Regardless, it’s not just fans who complain about this, but stars too, like Vin Diesel, who once predicted that “Furious 7” would win Best Picture. Well, now J.J. Abrams is getting in on the action.

Speaking at the Oscar Wilde Awards in L.A. last week, the director of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” said everyone involved with “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is feeling that Mark Hamill has put up some Academy-worthy work in Rian Johnson‘s film.

“I think we are all going to be very upset if he does not win an Oscar, and no one more upset than Mark,” he said.

“He is hysterically funny,” Abrams added about Hamill’s talents. “He has done comedy. He is an amazing guy — he can do anything.”

Good lord, man, we haven’t even seen a trailer yet for ‘The Last Jedi,’ so maybe let’s hold on giving Hamill the Oscar already. But in case you thought you couldn’t be more excited for the movie, it’s time to take it up a notch. [via New York Daily News]
