Spider-Man wasn’t the first Marvel property that Sony messed up. While it’s certainly the most notable, way back in 2013, the studio lost the rights to Ghost Rider, with the character reverting back to Marvel, along with Blade and Punisher. This was after two movies — 2007’s sorta decent “Ghost Rider” and 2011’s widely dismissed “Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance” — featuring Nicolas Cage as the title character, with the property pretty much stalling out after the second flick. Marvel hasn’t yet done anything with Blade, though Punisher was reintroduced in “Daredevil” on Netflix, and will star in his own series next year. As for Ghost Rider, he’s going to ride his motorcycle into an ongoing series.
At San Diego Comic Con it was revealed that Ghost Rider will appear in the next season of “Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” with Gabriel Luna (“True Detective” season 2) getting the flaming skull duties as Robbie Reyes (as opposed to Johnny Blaze). There’s no word yet on how he’ll fit into the narrative, or if his duties will follow into other parts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (doubtful), but it’s a fair bet you won’t be getting another Ghost Rider movie anytime soon.
You can also expect to see Life-Model Decoys in season 4 of ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.,’ which could bring the storylines to some interesting places. Are you still watching the show? Let us know what you think about Ghost Rider and the upcoming season in the comments section. [THR]
