If you were to point out a piece of technology that best summarizes that changing shape of the world, I wouldn’t necessarily start with an e-book. However, Olivier Assayas feels it’s the perfect vehicle to explore that very theme in his next movie.
The director reteams with his “Summer Hours” and “Clouds Of Sils Maria” star Juliette Binoche for “E-book,” which will also feature Guillaume Canet, Vincent Macaigne, Christa Theret and Pascal Gregory. And don’t expect this to be serious, as Assayas promises it’s going to make you LOL.
“ ‘Clouds of Sils Maria’ was a kind of comedy. This is a step further in that direction,” Assayas told Variety, adding that it’s “very much actor and dialogue-driven, part film, part narrative, part essay.”
Frankly, it sounds a bit in the vein of Jean-Luc Godard. Assayas explains that the movie will explore, “How we adapt or don’t adapt to the way the world’s changing” through “a series of intimate conversations” focused on the affairs of middle-aged characters.
It’s intriguing stuff for the director, who seems to be branching off into all kinds of directions. “E-book” will start gearing up once he’s done his duties as the jury President at the Locarno Film Festival, and he’s just about finished his script for the spy thriller “Wasp Network,” which tells the story of a terrorist group in Florida, who extended their influence in Central America. That is aiming to shoot next year. As for the forever delayed “Idol’s Eye,” it really doesn’t sound like it’s going to happen anytime soon….
