Fresh off his borderline crazy series “The Young Pope,” Paolo Sorrentino has lined up his next feature, the long gestating “Loro.” The film will star regular Sorrentino collaborator Toni Servillo (“The Great Beauty,” “Il Divo“) as former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi.
Berlusconi is an interesting figure in Italian politics. He served as prime minister for nine years and was elected to the senate in 2013 before being convicted that same year for tax-fraud. As ScreenDaily notes, Sorrentino has dabbled in political projects before, most notably with the celebrated “Il Divo,” while politicians factor into “The Young Pope” as well, so the film fits perfectly in his wheelhouse.
This project has been on and off for Sorrentino for a few years, with the director previously discussing dropping the project in November of last year. Yet, it’s moving forward now with shooting starting as early as this summer. So, see you at Cannes in 2018?
