“The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” established the template that proved that despite Ryan Murphy‘s usual tendency toward the melodramatic, he could treat real-life material with some degree of depth and insight. We’ll see if that trend continues with the next chapters of the anthology series, but the success of the first iteration has certainly started attracting some big names to his roster.

Penélope Cruz will join Edgar Ramírez and Darren Criss in the third season of “American Crime Story.” The episodes will dive into the true story and mystery of Andrew Phillip Cunanan, an American serial killer who murdered at least five people, including fashion designer Gianni Versace, on the steps of his Miami Beach mansion during a three-month period in 1997. Criss will play the killer, with Ramírez as Gianni and Cruz as Donatella. And we’ll definitely be watching…
…but we’ll have to wait. The Hurricane Katrina-set season of “American Crime Story” is expected to arrive first in 2018, but the Versace episodes will be coming the same year. [EW]
