Filmmaker Sofia Coppola is taking a new turn this summer with “The Beguiled,” a steamy, Southern gothic drama starring Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, and Colin Farrell, that looks unlike anything the filmmaker has done before. However, it looks like the director might be borrowing a page from “Marie Antoinette,” by bringing some contemporary sonic flavor into the Civil War-era tale.
According to the official Cannes Film Festival page for the movie, rock band Phoenix are scoring the film. Coppola is married to the band’s frontman Thomas Mars, and the group has previously provided album cuts for “The Bling Ring” and “Somewhere,” and appeared in “A Very Murray Christmas.” So, their participation is only somewhat a surprise, and I’d imagine their musical contribution might be similar to Kevin Shields‘ atmospheric score work on ‘Antoinette,’ though obviously, we’ll have to wait and see.
Phoenix are currently gearing up to start touring behind their forthcoming album, Ti Amo, which will be released on June 9th. “The Beguiled” opens in cinemas on June 30th, and there’s no word yet on an official soundtrack release.
