‘Wild Horse Nine’: Steve Buscemi Replaces Mark Ruffalo In Martin McDonagh’s Next Dramedy Starring Sam Rockwell

One of the more mysterious films making the rounds is the next feature from writer/director Martin McDonagh (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) as the pic, Wild Horse Nine,” reunites him with actor Sam Rockwell after the two previously working together on “Seven Psychopaths” and “Three Billboards” (the latter earning Rockwell a Best Supporting Actor Oscar win). More casting news has arisen while we patiently wait for plot details from the studio.

Steve Buscemi has reportedly joined the film that sees him take a part alongside Rockwell, John Malkovich (“The Fantastic Four: First Steps”), and Parker Posey (The White Lotus”). The casting news hailing from The Hollywood Reporter reveals not only has Buscemi joined the project, but the veteran actor has replaced Mark Ruffalo (“Mickey 17,” “Poor Things”) after the actor seemingly exited over scheduling issues.

Christopher Walken (“Dune: Part Two”), who worked with the filmmaker and Rockwell on “Seven Psychopaths,” was another name that had been said to have removed himself from the lineup.

Details for “Wild Horse Nine” are as scarce as it gets, as alluded to at the top, but one of the more perplexing aspects is that McDonagh will be shooting on Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island, later this month. This is notably an island location that doesn’t see much use by film productions making the lack of information about the film even more mysterious to folks following closely.

Buscemi, a former New York City firefighter, has had an impressive acting career with memorable roles in “Ghost World,” “Reservoir Dogs,” “Fargo,” “The Big Lebowski,” “Desperado,” the satirical Soviet Union film “The Death of Stalin,” and the fantastic HBO gangster series “Boardwalk Empire.” He most recently joined the cast of Netflix/Tim Burton’s “Addams Family” series revival “Wednesday” which features Jenna Ortega as the titular protagonist.

Given the production shoot gearing up soon, we likely should hear more names on the call sheet, and hopefully more details as well. Also, the involvement of Disney‘s Searchlight Pictures will likely make a festival debut before an awards season domestic release given McDonagh’s track record with previous awards-caliber outings doing extremely well.
