With “Deadpool 2” overcoming the hurdle of losing director Tim Miller by hiring “John Wick” co-helmer David Leitch to take over, now everyone can get back to the business of making the sequel. And the question that’s currently on the minds of many fans is: how will the followup will compare to the first? “Deadpool” marched to its own irreverent tone, mocking the superhero movie milieu, earning it’s R-rating, and doing it all on a threadbare budget (by blockbuster standards). Generally in Hollywood, studios double down on sequels, throwing more money and resources at them, because in most cases (though this year has seen a lot of exceptions to the rule) they’ll make more money the original. But big budgets are not what “Deadpool” as a brand and franchise is all about, and producer Simon Kinberg is well aware that the magic of the movie came in its spirit, not in the dollars spent making it. And the aim is to once again surprise audiences without turning “Deadpool” into something it’s not.

“The goal for us when we sat down and started talking about it was it needs to be as provocative and startling as the first film which means it can’t just be a continuation of the first film,” Kinberg told EW. “It has tonally and stylistically be as fresh and original. That’s a big challenge especially because they had 10 years to gestate on the first movie and we don’t have that kind of time on the second movie. That’s the biggest mandate going into on the second film: to not make it bigger. We have to resist the temptation to make it bigger in scale and scope, which is normally what you do when you have a surprise hit movie. But actually stay true to the tenets of it’s the tone and the style and the humor that make it so special — it’s not the explosions and the special effects.”
That’s pretty good news and indicates that 20th Century Fox doesn’t want to fuck up a good thing, and trusts their creatives — and why not, after “Deadpool” racked up $782 million worldwide.
Filming will begin on “Deadpool 2” next year, and it’ll hit cinemas in 2018.
