**Spoilers ahead**
M. Night Shyamalan‘s comeback has been official since “Split” topped the box-office for three weekends in a row back in late January/early February of this year. By then it had made $100 million in those three weekends alone. Its overall domestic gross is currently close to $138 million, an all out smash for Blumhouse and Universal, which had the film budgeted at a skimp $9 million. I thought it was a silly, but well-orchestrated film that benefited from James McAvoy‘s incredible performance and a twist that made you think twice about everything that had happened leading up to it.
Although the title of this post should already be an indicator, be warned that we are about to talk about the film’s finale.
Bruce Willis‘ superhero from “Unbreakable,” David Dunn, shows up in “Split” to reveal what will likely be a melting pot of both films for this upcoming sequel. I am an avid admirer of Shyamalan’s “Unbreakable,” and there have always been rumors that a sequel might one day surface. “Unbreakable” managed to both deconstructe the comic-book genre to its core and fully fleshed out an unexpected hero in Willis’ Dunn.
So far, we know that the “Split” sequel will be titled “Glass,” referring to Mr. Glass, the wheelchair wheeling villain from “Unbreakable,” played by a gray-haired, afro-sporting Samuel L. Jackson. What would the film be about? Universal has finally provided the answer with an official synopsis, which reads as follows:
From Unbreakable, Bruce Willis returns as David Dunn as does Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price, known also by his pseudonym Mr. Glass. Joining from Split are James McAvoy, reprising his role as Kevin Wendell Crumb and the multiple identities who reside within, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey Cooke, the only captive to survive an encounter with The Beast.
Following the conclusion of Split, Glass finds Dunn pursuing Crumb’s superhuman figure of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy presence of Price emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men.
This riveting culmination of his worldwide blockbusters will be produced by Shyamalan and Jason Blum, who also produced the writer/director’s previous two films for Universal. They produce again with Ashwin Rajan and Marc Bienstock, and Steven Schneider, who will executive produce.
If you’re expecting an expanded universe, guess again, as “Glass” will be a “culmination” of the trilogy. However, this will no doubt bring more people to discover “Unbreakable,” which was seen as a box-office disappointment back in 2000. It’s a movie that never got its due, but will now be re-evaluated thanks to the roaring success of “Split.”
“Glass” opens on January 19, 2019. [Cosmic Book News]
