‘The Boys’ Star Jack Quaid Says He Auditioned For James Gunn’s Superman

Actor Jack Quaid, the son of Dennis Quaid, recently made headlines by saying on the Daily Beast podcast, “I am an immensely privileged person, was able to get representation pretty early on, and that’s more than half the battle, [but]…I don’t think it undermines my talent.” And good for him for admitting it and taking it head-on.

Quaid is doing press for the fourth and penultimate season of Prime Video’s “The Boys” superhero satire film and was recently featured on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. While the actor discussed all kinds of topics, his small but meaningful appearance in “Oppenheimer,” “The Boys,” obviously, “Lucky Logan,” the HBO show “Vinyl” and more.

And during the interview, Quaid admitted to auditioning for James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman” movie.

“I think everyone did,” Quaid said about all the young actors who auditioned for it, perhaps being a little modest. “If you fit a bill… it’s like just one of those things. I didn’t get very far at all. I put myself on tape, and it went nowhere, and that’s fine.”

Quaid seemed to suggest his audition went nowhere because everyone thought and knew, or at least he did, that David Cornswet, who did last the Superman/Clark Kent gig, would likely get the role even years before it became a reality.

“That’s totally cool [missing out on the role], specifically because I actually know David Cornswet a little bit; we did a pilot years ago that never went anywhere. But he’s one of those people you meet, and you go, ‘Oh, yeah, whenever they need another [Superman], it’s probably going to be [him]. That guy is Superman!”

Quaid coincidentally voices Superman on the animated show “My Adventures With Superman” for Adult Swim and MAX, but even then, he didn’t think it would give him much of a leg up.

“I remember getting that audition and being like, ‘yes, I’m the voice of Superman in a cartoon, but I don’t think I really fit the bill physically, and that’s fine, it’s totally cool” (to be fair, he’s 6’1 and anyone can bulk up, wear wings, change hair, etc., he’s not totally wrong for the part). Quaid also added that he didn’t get to try on the suit but said he’d be open to other roles in superhero films and said something in “Star Wars” “would be a dream” role.

Meanwhile, James Gunn’s “Superman,” starring David Cornswet and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, is almost done shooting. James Gunn posted on Threads saying goodbye to their Cleveland location. “Cleveland – today we are leaving you after six amazing weeks of shooting,” he wrote. “From the moment we first came here on a scout a tad less than a year ago, and Terminal Tower was lit up with the colors of Superman, I knew you were a special place. I would walk down your streets, and someone would stop me and tell me how grateful they were we were shooting in their city — not once, not twice, but dozens of times.”

Gunn said the production had “a couple weeks left,” adding, “It’s a long shoot… but we’re getting close!!” “Superman” began production in February, so that’s indeed quite the long shoot. “Superman” is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
