Not Likely Arriving Until 2021
The common refrain on these lists is, “where is______[insert title of your favorite film here]???” And we get that. Some films were omitted because we have a strong reason to believe they won’t be arriving until 2021. On the top of that list is Jane Campion’s “Power Of The Dog” starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst who replaced Elisabeth Moss earlier this year. A Netflix film, that one is definitely being saved for 2021 per various reports and Campion herself. George Miller’s “Three Thousand Years of Longing” with Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton is said to shoot summer 2020, so that very likely pushes it off until the next year. Also preparing to shoot this spring and summer are Joachim Trier and Julia Ducournau of “Raw” fame. Trier’s “The Worst Person In The World” likely won’t be ready 2020 and neither will Ducournau’s “Titane” which sounds like something that might be saved for Cannes 2021. Hayao Miyazaki’s “How Do You Live?” is in the mix somewhere too, but the master takes his time and it’s uncertain when he will be ready. Same with Wong Kar-wai who takes an inordinate amount of time between films. It sounds like his “Blossoms” project will arrive as a series next year, but the eventual film that is sprung forth from it is likely a ways off. The Justin Kurzel/WWII project “Ruin” with Margot Robbie and Matthias Schoenaerts is greatly anticipated, but he ended up shooting the “True History of the Kelly Gang” instead, so if we’re lucky, he’ll pick up “Ruin” next year, but who knows if Robbie’s schedule will be open by then. Also likely for 2021 before 2020 are John Michael McDonagh‘s “The Forgiven,” and Ruben Ostlund’s Palme d’Or follow-up “Triangle Of Sadness” (which he himself won’t be ready until then) among many others. Also, note that the impending Alexander Payne/Mads Mikkelsen project was scrapped at the last minute right before production was set to begin. So that one is actually coming never.
Honorable Mentions:
Like anything around here, we could’ve easily made this a list of 200+ picks, but we’d like to keep our sanity. There are lots of additional interesting movies coming out next year. Reed Morano‘s “The Rhythm Section” with Blake Lively could be good, but one could argue all the delays are reason enough to not include on the main list. Disney seems to be taking a big swing with the delayed-to-hell, but directed-by-Kenneth-Branagh drama “Artemis Fowl“; Pixar‘s got both “Onward” and “Soul” which could be fun; coming off of the success of “Venom,” Sony is hoping “Morbius,” starring Jared Leto, will be the next big spin-off hit in the Spider-Man franchise; the Antoine Fuqua-directed sci-fi/actioner “Infinite” with Mark Wahlberg may yield something interesting; Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas star in the erotic thriller “Deep Water” from director “Fatal Attraction”; starring Awkwafina, “Raya and the Last Dragon” could be a big Disney animated hit.
Other mainstream movies of interest that could be noteworthy or good ol’ entertainment include Guy Ritchie‘s “The Gentlemen,” which looks like a throwback to his “Snatch” and crime comedy days, Blumhouse‘s horror reimagining of “Fantasy Island” with Michael Pena, the ‘Kingsman‘ prequel “The King’s Man,” the Russo brothers-produced actioner, “Dhaka” starring Chris Hemsworth, Netflix’s “Red Notice” with The Rock, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot (presuming it comes in 2020), the G.I. Joe thing, “Snake Eyes,” “Fast & Furious 9” (Vroom!) “The Conjuring 3,” “Bad Boys For Life,” “Doolittle” (lol), “Underwater,” the sci-fi actioner with Kristen Stewart, Gavin O’Connor‘s “The Way Back” starring Ben Affleck, Peter Berg‘s “Wonderland” with his bff, Mark Wahlberg for Netflix and that poor “New Mutants” movie (RIP, in advance).
Sally Potter‘s untitled new film starring Javier Bardem, Elle Fanning, Chris Rock and more sounds very good (Sundance?). Also of interest is John Turturro’s ‘Lebowski’ sequel “The Jesus Rolls,” Ron Howard’s ” Hillbilly Elegy” starring Amy Adams, Tomas Alfredsson‘s “Jonssonligan,” “The Turning” (Mackenzie Davis), Michel Haznavicius’ ” La prince Oublie,” Drew Pearce‘s “Quartermaster” (probably 2021), the Untitled Woody Allen (nope), “Luxembourg” from the director of “The Tribe” (long-delayed, who knows), “Resistance” (Jesse Eisenberg as Marcel Marceau), “Uncharted” (LOL this is never coming out), “The One And Only Ivan” (Angelina Jolie, Sam Rockwell), “Bob’s Burgers: The Movie,” “Run” (Sarah Paulson and the director of “Searching“), “Del Mar” (Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumulo‘s belated follow-up to “Bridesmaids“), “Palm Springs” (Andy Samberg/Cristin Milioti rom-com), “The Dig” (Carey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes), “The Prom” (a musical adaptation from Ryan Murphy with Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman) and whatever Keanu Reeves gets up to next year that’s not accounted for. That’s all folks! Got a most anticipated film and perhaps one that we quote unquote “missed”? Post your missive in the comments section and we love you no matter what toxic garbage you write.
