12 Films To Watch In January: ‘Better Man,’ ‘Wolf Man,’ ‘Presence’ & More

January is always an odd month on the theatrical release calendar, shouldering plenty of carry-over, hot-ticket films making their wide releases along with some more forgettable films. This January hosts a genuinely eclectic bunch. While some Oscar hopefuls are getting wider attention, such as Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths” and shortlisted documentary “No Other Land,” there are more than a few genre-leaning films.

Big monster-movie horror, a Will Ferrell comedy, art-house animation, and even a new ‘Star Trek‘ film are on the docket. Whether you’re looking for prestige filmmaking, pure escapism, or something in between, there’s something for you, all while the 2025 Sundance Film Festival begins. 

Hard Truths
Mike Leigh reunites with Marianne Jean-Baptiste for the character-driven drama “Hard Truths.” The film follows Pansy, a woman lorded by her anger at the world which causes friction in her relationships — most notably those with her husband and son. The only reprieve comes through in her relationship with her sister who has a polar-opposite, cheerful disposition. Michele Austin and David Webber also star. 
Release Date: In theaters January 10 via Bleecker Street

Birdeater
Jack Clark and Jim Weir make their directorial debuts with the horror film, “Birdeater.” Handling heavy topics, the film follows a bachelor party where it’s realized the main couple has serious problems. Mackenzie Fearnley, Shabana Azeez, Ben Hunter, and Jack Bannister star. 
Release Date: In theaters January 10 via Dark Sky Films. 

Better Man” 
Putting a spin on the genre, pop singer Robbie Williams is portrayed by a CGI chimpanzee in the musical biopic, “Better Man.” Directed by Michael Gracey (“The Greatest Showman”), the film follows Williams’s life and his rise to fame. Jonno Davies performs the motion capture and voices the character alongside Williams. Steve Pemberton, Kate Mulvany, Alison Steadman, and Damon Herriman also star. 
Release Date: In theaters January 10 via Paramount Pictures

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera
Gerard Butler, O’Shea Jackson Jr., and Meadow Williams reprise their roles for the upcoming action crime sequel, “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera.” Written and directed by Christian Gudegast, the film takes place immediately following the events of the original, as Butler’s “Big Nick” O’Brien tracks down Jackson Jr.’s Donnie Wilson who is planning another heist.
