11 Shows To Watch In June: ‘The Acolyte,’ ‘House Of The Dragon’ & ‘The Bear’

Major IP and critical darlings are set to return this June. The big names include the latest entry to the Star Wars saga with “The Acolyte,” along with the much-hyped season two of the “Game of Thrones” spinoff series “House of the Dragon.” Elsewhere, there are the concluding chapters to season three of “Bridgerton,” along with the return of the Emmy Award-winning “The Bear.

While the month is definitely starting to feel the pull of last year’s WGA strikes with fewer overall releases, there’s plenty to maintain audience attention. From a Jake Gyllenhaal-led crime-thriller to the latest surrealist comedy offerings from Julios Torres, there might not be non-stop new releases, but what is coming out is worthwhile and interesting. 

Mayor of Kingstown” (Season 3) 
Jeremy Renner returns for season three of “Mayor of Kingstown” as part of the McLusky family on Paramount+. Hugh Dillon, Taylor Handley, Emma Laird, Tobi Bamtefa, Derek Webster, Nishi Munshi, Hamish Allan-Headley, and Michael Beach also star. Season three sees the pressure mounting on Renner’s Mike McLusky as Kingstown faces a new head of the Russian mob while a drug war rages inside and outside prison walls. 
Release Date: Season 3 premieres June 2 on Paramount+.

The Acolyte
Director Leslye Headland tackles the latest entry in the Star Wars saga with “The Acolyte.” Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, Carrie-Anne Moss, Dafne Keen, and more star in the series set 100 years prior to the “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace”. Along with Headland, directors include Alex Garcia Lopez, Kogonada, and Hanelle Culpepper

“Sweet Tooth” (Season 3)
The Netflix series “Sweet Tooth” returns for its third and final season. Created by Jim Mickle and starring Christian Convery, Nonso Anozie, Naledi Murray, and Stefania La Vie Owen, the series concludes its story as Gus and company embark on the last legs of his journey. Set in a post-apocalyptic world where human and animal hybrids live, the final season watches as the group sets forth on a quest to find Gus’s mother. 
Release Date: Season 3 premieres June 6 on Netflix.

Fantasmas
Julio Torres is making a name for himself as a singular filmmaker. From his series “Los Espookys” to this year’s surrealist “Problemista.” His latest, the HBO series “Fantasmas,” continues to build on his specific brand of comedy. The series follows Torres as he embarks on a quest across New York City in search of a golden oyster earring and all of the encounters her makes along the way. Martine Gutierrez, Tomas Matos, and Joe Rumrill star with Emma Stone, Paul Dano, Dylan O’Brien, and more making guest appearances. 
Release Date: Season 1 premieres June 7 on HBO.
