“Brand New Cherry Flavor”
The first trailer for the latest Netflix original series “Brand New Cherry Flavor” starring “Alita: Battle Angel” actress Rosa Salazar leaves quite the impression. The new horror series starring Salazar, Catherine Keener, Eric Lange, and Manny Jacinto follows a young would-be filmmaker who heads to Hollywood in the early ‘90s but ends up trapped in a hallucinatory rabbit hole of sex, magic, revenge, and kittens. Created by Nick Antosca (“The Act) and Lenore Zion and based on the novel of the same name from author Todd Grimson, the series looks to continue to capitalize on the popularity of original horror content on the streaming service.
Release Date: Season 1 premieres on August 13 on Netflix.
“Modern Love”
While Season 1 of Amazon’s “Modern Love” didn’t make much of a splash despite the big-name talent, this anthology series has still managed to obtain yet another all-star cast for its follow-up season. The series will continue to explore human connection and love in all of its forms, this time with performers such as Tobias Menzies (“The Crown,”) Lucy Boyton (“The Politician,”) Kit Harington (“Game of Thrones,) Dominique Fishback (“Show Me a Hero”) and Garrett Hedlund (“Mudbound”) on board. A collaboration between Amazon and The New York Times, the series was written and directed by John Carney.
Release Date: Season 2 premieres on August 13 on Amazon.
“Heels”
Perhaps one of the more niche television series debuting this month, “Heels” which is created by Michael Walden (“Loki”) tells the story of two rival brothers who grapple over their father’s wrestling promotion business while vying for national attention in small-town Georgia. Stephen Amell (in his first leading role since CW’s “Arrow”) and Alexander Ludwig star as the two brothers. The sports drama also stars Chris Bauer, Alison Luff, and Kelli Berglund.
Release Date: Season 1 premieres on August 15 on Starz.
“Nine Perfect Strangers”
Once upon a time, pre-” Big Little Lies,” Nicole Kidman starring in a television series may have seemed to be a novel concept. Following the success of “Big Little Lies” and then “The Undoing” however, especially with the accolades Kidman received, it’s less surprising. “Nine Perfect Strangers” will mark the second novel from author Liane Moriarty with Kidman attached. The Hulu miniseries also stars Melissa McCarthy, Bobby Cannavale, Rebecca Hall, and Luke Evans as stressed city dwellers who are trying to get on a path to a better way of living by attending a boutique health-and-wellness resort led by the mysterious Masha played by Kidman. Jonathan Levine directs.
Release Date: The series premieres on August 13 on Hulu.
