Veteran actor Michael Shannon made his directorial debut with the drama “Eric LaRue” a few years back which had been making the festival rounds. The pic places actress Judy Greer, notably known for her scene-stealing supporting roles, in a towering performance as a mother named Janice, who is coping alongside her husband played by Alexander Skarsgård (“The Northman”) with the fallout after her son murders three of his classmates from high school.
Thankfully, there is a big update concerning the character-driven drama as Magnolia Pictures is handling the North American release as it heads to theaters on April 4, also, releasing a trailer for the pic written by Brett Neveu and based on his 2002 play of the same name.
“Eric LaRue” first made its film world premiere at the Tribeca Festival in 2023 and also features actors Alison Pill, Tracy Letts, Paul Sparks, and Annie Parisse among the cast.
“I can’t believe my unbelievable good fortune to have Magnolia, a company I have admired for many years, distributing my first feature as a director,” said Shannon in a statement commenting on working with Magolina. “’Eric LaRue’ is as meaningful to me as any work I’ve done as an actor, and my intention was to make a film that perhaps could offer healing of some sort around an issue that has confounded us as a country for quite a long time. That issue being gun violence in schools and the infinite ripple effect it has on our society.”
Magnolia has provided us with the following logline:
“Janice (Greer) is coping with the fallout after her son murders three of his high school classmates. Struggling and moving through life as if in a haze, she is unable to let go of her anger and frustration. While her husband (Skarsgård) has found refuge at a new church, Janice finds it hard to seek solace in her faith despite her pastor’s pleas to heal her wounds by meeting with the mothers of her son’s victims. As Janice ponders what that meeting could achieve for her and her community, ‘ERIC LARUE’ asks audiences to witness the frayed emotional ripples that violent acts can engender.”
Caliwood Pictures presents A Big Indie and Brace Cove Production with producers Sarah Green (“The Bikeriders”), Karl Hartman (“Being The Ricardos”), and Jina Panebianco (“Famous”) alongside an executive producing team that features Shannon’s frequent collaborator Jeff Nichols, R. Wesley Sierk, John D. Straley, Joseph Panebianco, Declan Baldwin, Byron Wetzel, and Meghan Schumacher.
As mentioned at the top, Magnolia will release ‘Eric LaRue” in theaters on April 4, 2025, and you can watch that trailer below:
