As things continue to shift with the ongoing strikes, the release calendar for September is surprisingly packed with new releases along with some returning. While some series, such as “Sex Education” will be premiering final seasons, others, such as “The Boys” spinoff “Gen V” aim to create yet another mega-hit series. The tone of shows premiering is all over the place, too, which is always fun, from romantic comedies to horror fantasy. With the unpredictability of future releases, it will be interesting to discover just how many of these new shows can garner big audiences, how many will be destined for a season two — and how long the wait for one will be.
“The Wheel of Time” (Season 2)
Based on the fantasy book series from author Robert Jordan, Prime Video’s adaptation from showrunner Rafe Judkins returns for its second season. The series continues to follow Aes Sedai Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) as she seeks to protect and guide the man who will be the Dragon Reborn — a figure equipped with the power to either save the world or break it. The series stars Joshua Stradowski, Daniel Henney, Zoe Robins, Madeleine Madden, Marcus Rutherford, Donal Finn, and Ceara Coveney.
Premiere Date: September 1 via Prime Video.”
“The Changeling”
LaKeith Stanfield is one of the most engaging screen presences working today, making him a natural draw to the Apple series “The Changeling.” Based on the novel of the same name by Victor LaValle, “The Changeling” is a horror fantasy series that follows two individuals and their love story until one of them mysteriously vanishes, leaving the other to endure a “death-defying” odyssey through New York City. Our critic writes, “It may be, as Apple describes it, “a fairy tale for grown-ups,” but what’s scary about it is how much of it feels all too real.”
Premiere Date September 8 on Apple TV+.
“The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon”
The legacy of “The Walking Dead” continues to grow, this time with another spinoff series, “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.” Created by David Zabel, the series following Daryl (Norman Reedus) takes place after he first left The Commonwealth, washing ashore in France where growing radical movements further threaten peoples’ livelihoods. Clémence Poésy and Adam Nagaitis also star.
Premiere Date: September 10 on AMC.
“Welcome to Wrexham” (Season 2)
Following the surprise charm of its first season, the sports documentary series “Welcome to Wrexham” returns for its follow-up. Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds lead the series following their decision to buy and run the third-oldest professional football club in the world, hoping to create their own underdog story. Season two will continue to follow the Club as they aim for promotion out of the National League and return to the English Football League.
Premiere Date: September 12 on FX.
