In a trifecta of perfect timing, yesterday saw the Oscar nominations, first day of the Sundance Film Festival and the Critics Choice Awards all coincide. So grab a cup of coffee and get ready to peruse the latest list of movies honored with statues.
The first question you might ask is what bearing this has on the Oscars and the answer is: not much. The Critics Choice Awards tends to spread out the love, that was true last night, with no film in particular gaining a consensus. Also, with a handful of different acting categories, it gives the ceremony a chance to give everyone a prize. However, it does at least give an inkling of the mood among the critical community, with the awards voted on by the Broadcast Film Critics Association.
So, what did they like? Well, “12 Years A Slave” took Best Picture while Lupita Nyong’o took Best Actress in a category that honored a couple more folks left off the Oscar nominee list (Oprah Winfrey and Scarlett Johansson). In that spirit, “Blue Is The Warmest Color” won Best Foreign Film, though it was long ago deemed ineligible for the Oscars due to a rather arbitrary release date rule.
