’13: The Musical’ Trailer: Tamra Davis’ New ‘Glee’-Esque Netflix YA Film Premieres In August

Based on the highly praised Broadway musical, “13: The Musical,” Netflix has announced its adaptation is coming to their platform on August 12. Directed by Tamra Davis, best known for “Billy Maddison (1995), “Half Baked (1998), and “Crossroads” (2002). Tamra has dozens of directorial titles to her name and has worked with stars such as Adam Sandler, Britney Spears, and Drew Barrymore

In her early days, Davis directed countless music videos for big stars. Folks like Tone Loc, The Beastie Boys, The Smiths, and Sonic Youth. It’s interesting to see if directing music videos has helped with the process of making a musical. 

Here’s the official synopsis:

A 12-year-old NYC kid plans the ultimate Bar Mitzvah. However, those plans go awry when his parents reveal they are getting divorced, and he has to move halfway across the country. With no friends and his parents not on speaking terms, how is he going to have the epic Bar Mitzvah he’s always dreamed of?

The original musical was based on the book by Dan Elish and Robert Horn, with music and lyrics from Jason Robert Brown. The broadway production closed back in 2009 with over 105 performances to its name; however, the musical has since come back up until 2019.

It was said that content from the 2009 book would also be used in the film adaptation and is being overseen by Robert Horn himself. The musical is set to feature 18 songs from the original production, such as “Good Enough,” performed by Gabrielle Uhl, and “Opportunity,” performed by Frankie McNellis.
