A new year means a new barrage of television shows requiring instant viewing. While we’ve polished off all of our end-of-year lists for 2022, Hollywood refuses to slow down with both returns of highly anticipated series as well as welcomed new shows to dig into. Rian Johnson makes his return to television with Natasha Lyonne as his star, while filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn also takes another stab at a miniseries with his latest, “Copenhagen Cowboy.” Fan favorite shows such as “Servant” and “Hunters” arrive for their final seasons while Hirokazu Kore-eda makes his television debut through an original Netflix series. Winter may be long, but there’s plenty to keep us entertained through the colder months.

“Kaleidoscope”
The latest heist thriller to hit Netflix, “Kaleidoscope,” follows a master thief and his crew as they attempt a job with a price tag of $7 billion. Starring Giancarlo Esposito, Tati Gabrielle, Rosaline Elbay, and Paz Vega, the group of characters find themselves in the weeds as betrayals and other forces threaten their plans. Created by Eric Garcia (2010’s “Repo Men,” “Matchstick Men,”) the big pull of the series is its release gimmick, with each episode taking place at a different time throughout 25 years with each viewer being given a different viewing order. The future of streaming continues to expand.
Release Date: Season 1 premiered on January 1 on Netflix.
“Star Wars: The Bad Batch”
Following the franchise’s best series to date with “Andor,” we return to the George Lucas galaxy with Season 2 of “Star Wars: The Bad Batch.” Created by Dave Filoni, the series follows a unique squad of clones as they experience the fallout of the Clone Wars. Dee Bradley Baker stars as all members of “The Bad Batch.” Our critic wrote of Season 1, “At its best, “The Bad Batch” serves as a bridge between two eras of ‘Star Wars,’ as it presents the previously-unseen period when the Empire was just getting started, and most people still thought it was perfectly normal for a guy to suddenly declare himself Emperor and order the genocide of the entire Jedi Order.”
Release Date: Season 2 premieres January 4 on Disney+.
“Copenhagen Cowboy”
The latest from filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn (“The Neon Demon,” “Drive,”) “Copenhagen Cowboy” follows Miu (Angela Bundalovic,) a young woman who makes her way through Copenhagen’s criminal network seeking revenge. The noir-inspired series made its debut at last year’s Venice Film Festival where our critic described it as “…neon-soaked, with a penchant for nihilism and framed through the throbbing tempo of synthesizer beats…”
Release Date: The miniseries premieres on January 5 on Netflix.
“Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches”
Ann Rice adaptations are popular these days, first with 2022’s update on “Interview with the Vampire,” and now, “Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches.” Based on the author’s trilogy “Lives of the Mayfair Witches” released in the 1990s, the series follows Rowan Fielding (Alexandra Daddario,) a neurosurgeon who learns she’s the heiress to a dynasty of powerful witches haunted by a sinister spirit. Harry Hamlin, Tongayi Chirisa, and Jack Huston also star.
Release Date: Season 1 premieres on January 8 on AMC.
