‘180° South’ Soundtrack Features New Music From The Shins’ James Mercer & Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock

Some more soundtrack news today that has nothing to do with “Sex And The City 2.”

Indie heavyweights James Mercer (The Shins, Broken Bells) and Isaac Brock (Modest Mouse) have lent their considerably talented hands to the soundtrack of documentary “180° South: Conquerors of the Useless.” Directed by Chris Malloy and produced by Emmett Malloy (the White Stripes tour doc “Under The Great White Northern Lights”), the film retraces Yvon Chouinard’s and Doug Tompkins’ epic 1968 journey to Patagonia. The full synopsis is below:

Chris Malloy’s film strikes so deeply into the heart of Patagonia’s wilderness we come to feel at home there. 180° South: Conquerors of the Useless follows Jeff Johnson as he retraces the epic 1968 journey of his heroes Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins to Patagonia. Along the way he gets shipwrecked off Easter Island, surfs the longest wave of his life — and prepares himself for a rare ascent of Cerro Corcovado. Jeff’s life turns when he meets up in a rainy hut with Chouinard and Tompkins who, once driven purely by a love of climbing and surfing, now value above all the experience of raw nature — and have come to Patagonia to spend their fortunes to protect it.

Performing under his Ugly Casanova moniker, Brock lends nine songs to the film, while Mercer lends two, one of which is a cover of Neil Young’s “Journey Through The Past.” Love As Laughter, Mason Jennings and Jack Johnson round out the disc.

The film is currently doing a limited theatrical run and will hit DVD on June 8th. The soundtrack will follow a couple of weeks later on June 22nd via Johnson’s Brushfire Records label. The trailer for the film is below.
