2018 Daytime Emmy Award Nominations Prove You Aren’t Missing Much

The 45th Daytime Emmy Awards nominations were announced today and after reviewing the lengthy list of nominees it’s clear it’s yet another round of same old, same old.  This Emmy honor often features many repetitive nominees (and winners) which is one reason Oprah Winfrey infamously stopped submitting “The Oprah Winfrey Show” after it dominated the Talk Show category in the 1990s.  The long list of nominees can be found here, but its worth noting there are a few surprises.

Despite fluctuating ratings and a rocky creative run NBC’s “Megyn Kelly Today” earned an Outstanding Talk Show Informative nomination.  It’ll go up against “The Chew,” “The Dr. Oz Show,” “Larry King Now” and “Steve Harvey.”

11 things we’ve already learned about the 2018 Emmy Season

The recently added Outstanding Musical Performance in a Daytime Program includes nominees such as Andra Day and Common performing “Rise Up” on “The View” and Ben Platt and the cast of “Dear Evan Hansen” singing “You Will Be Found” on “The Today Show.”  The first winner in this category was Rachel Platten on “Good Morning America” last year.  Exciting, right?

Beyond that the list of nominees is incredibly predictable with almost every remaining Soap Opera program getting nominated in every major category and the same decades long running game and talk shows dominating theirs.  But, hey, 45 years, right?

Overall CBS led all network with 66 nominations while Syndicated distributors also tallied up the same number collectively.  Netflix made a strong push with 51 nods while streaming competitor Amazon earned 49.  NBC, ABC and PBS followed with 35, 33 and 29 respectively.

Among individual television shows “General Hospital” led all series with 26 nominations followed by fellow soaps “Days of Our Lives” and “The Young and the Restless” with 25 each.  “Sesame Street” and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” earned 13 and 11 nods for each program. The gay-themed “Eastsiders,” which recently moved to Netflix, made a big jump with six nominations including its second Daytime Digital Drama Series nod.

The 2018 Daytime Emmy Awards will be handed out on Sunday, April 29 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
