Love them or loathe them, the Oscars always make for a fascinating movie culture weekend, where Hollywood champions its thespians and craftspeople before it ushers in another calendar year of new releases. But before the Academy Awards, another annual ceremony celebrates the industry’s most schlocky and derided output from the past 12 months. Yup, it’s time for the 2025 Razzies, and this year’s winners didn’t disappoint.

In a shock to no one who saw it, “Madame Web” led Razzie nominees this year with three wins, including Worst Picture. The disastrious Sony superhero film (if one could even call it that) beat out the likes of “Megalopolis,” “Borderlands,” “Joker: Folie á Deux” and “Reagan” for the “top prize” this year. The film’s other two wins? Dakota Johnson for Worst Actress, as well as Worst Screenplay.
“Madame Web” edged out several other Razzie-nominated films that won two awards apiece. “Unfrosted” collected Worst Actor via Jerry Seinfeld‘s performance, with Amy Schumer picking up Worst Supporting Actress. Then Francis Ford Coppola won Worst Director for his self-financed $120 million opus “Megalopolis” (Jon Voight‘s Worst Supporting Actor Razzie was split between three different performances: “Megalopolis,” “Reagan,” and “Shadow Land & Strangers.”). And “Joker: Folie á Deux” also ratcheted two wins, for Worst Sequel and Worst Screen Combo for Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga.
Coppola and Phoenix’s respective wins put them in the rare category of Hollywood stars who have won both an Oscar and a Razzie. But Coppola was unperturbed by the backhanded nominations and provided an acceptance speech for Worst Director via Instagram. Here’s the director’s blurb in full:
“I am thrilled to accept the Razzie award in so many important categories for “Megalopolis,” and for the distinctive honor of being nominated as the worst director, worst screenplay, and worst picture at a time when so few have the courage to go against the prevailing trends of contemporary moviemaking! In this wreck of a world today, where ART is given scores as if it were professional wrestling, I chose to NOT follow the gutless rules laid down by an industry so terrified of risk that despite the enormous pool of young talent at its disposal, may not create pictures that will be relevant and alive 50 years from now.”
The Razzies aren’t entirely slanderous. There’s also the Razzie Redeemer award, given to a Razzie winner who rebounds with a critically well-received performance later in their career. The 2025 recipient? Pamela Anderson for her role in “The Last Showgirl.” Anderson received the Worst New Star Razzie in 1996 for “Barb Wire.”
