Heading into the first weekend of the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, many filmgoers likely have their schedule tightly planned for what films they are viewing for the next week. If it isn’t there already, one film to add to your schedule is “5 Seasons of Revolution” by Lina. The film, nominated for the Grand Jury Prize and already on lists such as our 52 Films Directed By Women to Watch in 2023, follows a young independent filmmaker and reporter, Lina, as she spends a decade undercover to document the Syrian revolution.
Adopting a series of aliases, Lina captures her and her friends’ personal stories as they face the struggle for freedom and autonomy. Throughout the film, Lina uses video diaries she has taken to tell their stories as, one by one, they are detained and become targeted by the regime. From Damascus to Homs to Aleppo, Lina tosses herself deep into the turmoil and finds herself alone and isolated in the violence and chaos– witnessing the unspeakable and barely escaping.
Premiering in the World Cinema Documentary Competition, “5 Seasons of Revolution” is produced by Laura Poitras and Diana El Jeiroudi alongside co-producers Orwa Nyrabia, Torstein Grude, and Ilja Roomans. The film held its premiere at the Egyptian Theater and has several more screenings throughout the week.
The collaboration AC Independent, a partnership between Anonymous Content and No Nation Films, is handling the sales of the film.
Part memoir, part journalism, “5 Seasons of Revolution” is an emotional and heart-wrenching story. Watch an exclusive clip below.
