'500 Days Of Summer' Soundtrack Features Feist, Regina Spektor & New She & Him Smiths Cover; Due July 14

The soundtrack details to “500 Days Of Summer” have been released and it contains much of the pop goodness we cited earlier this year. In fact ‘Summer’ director Marc Webb challenged our cynicism for twee projects and still in-your-faced us with a track by track commentary of every song used in the film, including track by the Pixies, Belle and Sebastian, Spoon and many many more (which was very cool, kudos to him).

Those tracks aren’t included on the soundtrack CD (you can never fit everything), but primary stand-out songs used in the film — The Smiths, Feist, Regina Spektor, Hall & Oates (which is featured in a pretty charming dance musical sequence) and Simon & Garfunkel — are included. The soundtrack hits shelves on July 14 coinciding with the film that comes out July 17 in limited release via Fox Searchlight.

The soundtrack also appears to contain a new track; a Smiths cover of “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want,” by She & Him — Zooey Deschanel’s band with M. Ward — that is not included in the film (at least not the version we saw earlier this year).

Deschanel obviously stars in the film alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt in what is being billed as an anti-romantic comedy. We saw the film earlier this year at the Independent Film Festival of Boston, and while we had a few problems with the film (a few stylistic things), overall we felt like it was a mostly charming and honest look at growing up and facing heartbreak — a rite of passage for all 20-somethings. It’s also sweet and endearing. You’ll surely not find a better romantic comedy in mainstream Hollywood, that’s for sure. The Temper Trap song featured in the trailer which sounds like modern U2 is used to really dreamy romantic effect in the movie too. As much as that song isn’t saying anything new musically, the way it’s used in the film is really something.
